Bolgheri: The Jewel of Tuscan Maremma

Bolgheri is the kind of place that feels like a well-kept secret, even though it’s world-famous. Tucked away in the Maremma region of coastal Tuscany, it’s a village defined by cypress trees, ancient brickwork and some of the most prestigious wine labels on the planet.

History: From feudal roots to “Super Tuscans”

Bolgheri’s history is inextricably linked to the Della Gherardesca family, who have owned land here since the 13th century. For centuries, it was a quiet agricultural outpost. However, its global reputation changed dramatically in the mid-20th century.

While the rest of Tuscany stuck to traditional Sangiovese grapes, local aristocrats began experimenting with Bordeaux grape varieties (like Cabernet Sauvignon). This rebellion gave birth to the “Super Tuscans” – wines like Sassicaia and Ornellaia – and transformed this sleepy village into a titan of the wine world.

Description: The ultimate Tuscan escape

The drive into town is an experience in itself. You arrive via Viale dei Cipressi, a breathtaking 5km straight road flanked by over 2,400 ancient cypress trees.

Bolgheri is the perfect destination for a luxury holiday. The village is small and pedestrian-friendly, entered through a single arched gate beneath a red brick castle. Inside, you’ll find narrow cobblestone alleys blooming with geraniums, artisan shops and elegant enotecas. For those seeking a longer break, the surrounding countryside is dotted with exclusive villas and restored farmhouses (agriturismi) offering magnificent views over vineyards stretching towards the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Typical foods: Maremma flavors

The cuisine here is robust, earthy, and designed to pair perfectly with strong red wines.

Wild boar (Cinghiale): Often served as a slow-roasted ragù over wide pappardelle pasta.

Tagliata di Manzo: Slices of local Chianina beef, seasoned with rosemary and olive oil.

Castagnaccio: A dense, traditional cake made from chestnut flour, pine nuts, and raisins.

Bolgheri DOC wine: You can't visit the town without a glass of the local red wine.

Nature and activities

Bolgheri is located in a unique microclimate, where the sea breeze cools the sun-drenched vineyards.

Padule di Bolgheri: The first private nature reserve in Italy. It is a paradise for birdwatchers, home to migratory bird species and lush wetlands.

Cycling: The flat coastal plains and rolling vineyard trails make it a cyclist's paradise.

Beach days: Just a 10-minute drive away are the pine-fringed sandy beaches of Marina di Castagneto Carducci.

Festivals and events

The village comes alive in the warmer months with celebrations of heritage and harvest:

Bolgheri Melody: A summer festival combining music, theatre and dance in a spectacular outdoor setting.

Castagneto a Tavola: A spring food and wine event showcasing the best local producers.

Harvest (Vendemmia): Although not a public festival in itself, a visit in September/October allows you to experience the energetic "golden hour" of the wine season.
